On teaching the work
I founded this practice in 2011 after five years on the MAC Pro counter, and I have spent every season since on set — at ERDEM, at Roksanda, at the covers that come and go. The Atelier exists because editorial rigour is taught, not stumbled into. One mentee per intake. One chair at the vanity. The standard is the one I am asked to hold on the day the cover is shot.
We do not run courses. We do not sell weekend certifications. What we offer is a twelve-month apprenticeship inside a working editorial studio — the same studio that holds the Charlotte Tilbury Bridal ambassadorship and the IMATS London keynote lineage — with the expectation that the work you leave with will stand up to a Vogue cover, a Tatler commission, or the most important morning of a bride's life. Those are the only three standards we recognise.

The Curriculum
Four terms, one studio, one standard.
Twelve months inside the Mayfair studio, structured as four editorial terms. Each chapter builds the muscle the last one left open — from skin as architecture to set etiquette that holds when the photographer calls “five minutes.”

I.
Skin as architecture
Twelve weeks on prep, priming, and the long-wear formulations that carry a bride through sixteen-hour days and a cover through eight-hour shoots.

II.
Editorial eye, bridal hand
Smudging, smoking, lining — the techniques translated from the ERDEM and Roksanda backstage into a soft, camera-ready finish for ceremony and reception.

The bespoke brush library
Training on the forty-two-piece Hakuhodo Japan collection developed in house — unavailable to retail, central to the studio's signature finish.

IV.
Set etiquette & on-location problem-solving
Director-level presence: travel kit, climate control, timing the room, and the calm that holds when a bride cries, a flight is missed, or the photographer asks for one more look.

01 Long-form
The Atelier Mentorship
A year inside the practice alongside James and the two senior artists — covering editorial technique, long-wear bridal formulation, set etiquette, and the business of being a working artist. Suits working MUAs with 2+ years of professional experience ready for editorial-grade work.

The Assistant Programme
A working apprenticeship on real bridal and editorial bookings — kit prep, chair-side support, lighting, breakdown. Suits junior artists building their first 50 professional faces under supervision on location in London and on destination jobs.

Notes for applicants.
Practical reading before you write — intake sizes, portfolio expectations, fees structure, and how international applicants are considered.
- How many artists are accepted each year?
- Two seats per cohort for the 12-month Atelier, a rolling roster of approximately six assistants annually, and eight seats per Masterclass date.
- When should I apply?
- Atelier cohorts open enrolment in October for a February start; Assistant applications are reviewed quarterly; Masterclass dates release four times a year and typically close four weeks ahead.
- What does the portfolio brief expect?
- Six to ten unretouched faces across editorial, bridal, or beauty work — at least three shot in available light. A short written note on the artist you want to become in five years is required alongside the imagery.
- Are international applicants considered, and how is the programme structured on fees?
- Yes — roughly one in three Atelier mentees travels in for the Mayfair residency. The Atelier is structured as a deposit-secured place with a final balance due four weeks before the cohort begins; assistants are paid per set day and Masterclass seats are paid in full at booking.
